About

My work comprises drawings, paintings, photographs and videos which explore the mystery, energy and transformative power of water, the life force and the process of creation. Long contemplation of the constantly changing patterns which play on the surfaces of the streams, ponds, mill-races in my nearby valley has given me direct experience of the life-force energy of the natural world. The dazzling reflections have no mass, they are empty, made of light. Playing on the mind, setting up rhythms in the body, they have been active in my work for over 14 years. It is an ongoing investigation into the aliveness and sentience of the living world, which is not separate from myself. These vibrations are not expressed literally, but in a stream of marks which have their own inner energy.

Zen practice and intuition informs my work. I have practiced in the Rinzai Zen tradition since 2013 and lead regular Zen Brushwork sessions which involve meditation, energy-raising exercises and calligraphy using a large brush.

Alongside individual work, I have been engaged in collaborative art experiments and projects since 2008 and find the field that develops between the group and the creative process very compelling.

Creativity / Art as a force.

Like lightning — fierce and bright, or arising like morning dew — intimate and soft. Natural.

An art movement of coherence -- life gathering, currents forming, sensing what is most alive.

Artists as sensing instruments among sensing instruments, doing the inner work to awaken perception. Then meeting others who feel the same current.

No longer self-expression. Sensing what wants to happen. Giving form to where life is rising.

“Manifesto” based on a dialogue with Hester Reeve, Jessica Bell and Emma Cocker
